51 Enigma Code Machine
The Enigma machine was the main encoding device of the German armed forces in the Third Reich. Intended to produce encryption so complex that even the world’s finest brains could not crack it, it was devised by a Dutchman in 1919, but it was a German, Dr Arthur Scherbius, who bought the patent and made the machine. In 1923, it was marketed by Scherbius’s company as the ‘Enigma’, a device for sending confidential business information over public telegraph systems. It remained in commercial production until 1929, by which time the German military had begun to take an interest.
Not enigmatic enough: a late-war four-rotor version of the Enigma cipher machine.
